the art of creating a good acronym
the art of creating a good acronymto be frank, i hate acronyms. really. it is a great example of how lazy the modern human has become. another example would be the washing machine. wait, i shld narrow down the term 'modern humans' to specifically 'modern singaporeans'
PIE, VJC, SMU, GPP, PW, PW OP, I&R, NTU, SMS, SYF, NJC, KJE, ECP, CTE, NUS, TPE,
SSC, SYCO, PJC, AHS, HP, MSN, BK, MRT, SJAB, GDP, PAP, DBS, WP, UPS, T2/T1, BA, ASAP, POSB, MOE, PUB, HDB....
and the list goes on and on and on...
the acronym i hate the most? LOL. seriously? must u say that 3 letters when u can laugh? like jane, who, for donno wad reason, suddenly lik to use that freaking 3 letters so much it irritates all of us (not just me. steph too!). wad's so hard bout HAHAHA! funny LOL. so weird! when u're telling a joke and someone goes "LOL!" then that become the funny joke. not funny- haha! but funny- weird. really.
gosh, ppl are really in love with acronyms. for every term that they'll be using for some time, there will be an acronym for it. think PW. i don really understand though. is it that hard say a word that has the same no. of syllabus as the letter itself? i'm not very sure why i hate acronyms too. it just irritates me that ppl are using them so often that they themselves can form half the sentence. remove the acronym and u have a sentence that has its main content missing.
like:
to ur pw mate, "let's meet at 8am to do PWOP, then go PS BK for lunch. i need to go home to do I&R ASAP."
to the taxi driver, "take the PIE then turn into the TPE and exit at tamp. you can drop me at the MRT." (remove the acronyms and u're lost)
how to make a good acronym:
1. letter W cannot start.
think WP. isn'e it so much harder to say it compared to PW? i think so coz my tongue can't seem to roll out the 'W' as well as 'Workers'
2. letters S and C cannot be together
on the 31 trip back to tamp. it will pass by a factory/office called SCS. try saying that normally. i bet by the time u're done introducing the company to ur clients, they will be drenched with ur saliva. who's the funny guy would create an acronym with the saliva-sputtering letters put together?
3. if u're power enuff, make the term so long that it's aconym can become a word.
like progress package. yes, PROGRESS is the acronym. it stands for
PRoviding
Opportunities through
Growth,
REmaking
Singapore for
Success. bet u didn't noe that. and LASER(
Light
Amplification by
Stimulated
Emission of
Radiation) and LASIK (
Laser-
Assisted
In
Situ
Keratomileusis). how power can that weird genius of a person come up with such acronyms that they can be string together to form a word?
4. make sure the person who's saying it can say it well.
after all, acronyms are mostly used in conversations only. and if u can't say it properly, then taking time to say the whole term may be easier. like the lousy anouncement maker this morning. wah lao eh!! fake accent plus nervous wreck plus lousy pronounciation. every announcement is screwed up. trust the new SC (see! again!) to send someone lik that.
